There’s something truly magical about waking up on the Outer Banks to discover a blanket of snow covering the dunes and transforming our coastal landmarks into a rare winter wonderland. After an almost 7-year wait since the last significant snowstorm in 2018, the OBX is once again blanketed in snow—an event that feels almost too surreal for many locals and visitors alike. For a lot of our children, this is their first-ever snowfall, making this moment even more special.

The excitement in the air is contagious as kids—who are used to the beach’s summer warmth—swap their usual beach gear for mittens, scarves, and makeshift sleds. Sledding down snowy hills might not be a common pastime in the OBX, but that hasn’t stopped families from getting creative. Beach boogie boards, typically used for riding ocean waves, are now being repurposed as sleds, gliding down the snowy slopes of Jockey’s Ridge and neighborhood hills. The sound of laughter fills the crisp winter air, as families come together to embrace this rare and fleeting experience.

Local landmarks, usually framed by sand and sea, now resemble scenes from a snow globe. The iconic Currituck Lighthouse stands tall against a stunning backdrop of frosted trees, while the Wright Brothers Memorial, dusted in white, provides a breathtaking new perspective that’s perfect for photos. It's a sight that truly captures the essence of what makes the Outer Banks so special—an unspoiled coastal beauty that can surprise you in the most unexpected ways.

For many, it’s a chance to capture memories that will last a lifetime. Whether you were out there playing in the snow or enjoying the rare views from the comfort of your home, we hope these photos bring a little extra winter magic to your day.
