We don’t mean to, but we definitely pronounce some of our words wrong. Or are you saying it wrong?

To blend in like a native, see below.

1.Corolla- Co-RAH-la: northern town on the Outer Banks NOT pronounced like the Toyota

2. Manteo- MAN-ee-oh: I might get push back on how to say this town on Roanaoke Island...some people pronounce the T, but not when we’re talking fast.Yes, we do that in the south, sometimes.

3. Wanchese-WAN-cheese: town at the southern end of Roanoke Island.

4. Bodie Island: 5. BAH-dee: an area of the National Seashore, including a lighthouse with the same name. Pronounced like every”body”.

5. Rodanthe: Row-DANTH-ee: town on the southern end of the Outer Banks

6. North Easter: Nor Easter: don’t pronounce the TH in north.

7. Croatan: Crow-a-TAN: the name of highway 158 in town. Though, we mostly just say 158.

(extra credit: we also don’t call Virginia Dare Trail…well, all that. We just say “the Beach Road.”)

Notable mentions:

  • It’s a Sound not a Bay

  • Those are Heat Pumps, not Furnaces

  • And our homes are built on Pilings, not Stilts
